Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — On Wednesday afternoon, the Blackman-Leoni Department of Public Safety responded to a structure fire at 1275 Breezy Lane on the east side of Leoni Township. An off duty Firefighter, who lives nearby, was among the first to report the fire. He observed flames coming from the east side of the residence.
Upon arrival, crews encountered heavy fire and smoke consuming most of the ground level. Due to rapidly deteriorating conditions, firefighters initiated a defensive attack as the fire spread through the attic and void spaces above the main floor and garage. After several hours on scene, crews were able to bring the fire under control. At the time of the fire, no one was home.
According to authorities, preliminary findings suggest that the fire originated in the kitchen and may have been burning for several hours before being reported. Blackman-Leoni Fire Investigators will conduct a full investigation to determine the cause and origin. The home suffered extensive damage and four dogs tragically perished in the fire.
The Blackman-Leoni Department of Public Safety thanked Grass Lake Fire, Napoleon Fire, Jackson City Fire, Summit Fire, and J-DART for their assistance on scene.
