A Spring Arbor couple is being held in a maximum-security Mexican prison after their arrest at a Cancun airport earlier this month. Family members say Paul and Christy Akeo were detained on March 4 over a disputed credit card charge with Palace Resorts.
Local reports claim the couple defrauded a Cancun hotel out of more than $100,000 by canceling transactions, but their daughter, Lindsey Hull, says those allegations are false. She says American Express ruled in their favor and believes her parents were wrongly targeted.
The family has reached out to U.S. officials for help and hired attorneys in both countries. U.S. Rep. Tom Barrett says he’s working with the State Department and the White House to get them released.
