The Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians is appealing a recent court ruling that restricts their fishing rights. In 2022, the Sault Tribe moved to vacate a 2020 agreement that regulated fishing rights. That was denied by the courts in August. The Tribe argues that they are covered by an 1836 Treaty, which aboriginal rights continue into this day and are federally protected. They say it’s the responsibility of the federal government to protect the Indian treaty rights, saying the restrictions jeopardize their livelihood. In a release, the Tribe said it’ll file a notice of appeal to the United States Court of Appeals.
