A proposed solar farm in Jackson County has local officials working to balance community interests and state regulations.

The Grass Lake Solar Project, led by NextEra Energy, would cover 700 acres along Page Avenue between Grass Lake and Leoni Townships. While the company is collaborating with local leaders to draft an ordinance, a new state law could limit local governments’ authority over large renewable energy projects.

Grass Lake Township Supervisor John Lesinski says the company could bypass them entirely by appealing to the Michigan Public Service Commission if they can’t reach an agreement. He expressed concern that the state law doesn’t adequately consider local government’s input.

NextEra Energy says it looks forward to continued collaboration with the community. The project could bring $700,000 in payment-in-lieu-of-taxes revenue, with most going to the county and $12,000 to Grass Lake Township.

Lesinski believes more local funding would help offset the impact on the community. Township trustees are drafting an ordinance, with a public hearing expected in February.
