Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — The Jackson City Council has officially scrapped plans for a pay-to-park system downtown. The reversal, finalized at their April 15 meeting, came after pushback from local businesses and residents. A city spokesperson said the formal vote was necessary to undo the council’s earlier approval of the paid parking plan.

Mayor Daniel Mahoney has formed a task force to reevaluate parking options. That group, which includes city officials and the parking manager, has already met once and will present recommendations by June.

City Engineer Troy White said if parking meters are off the table, the city might need to raise parking assessments or fees to fund improvements or maintain services. The scrapped plan would have charged $2 per hour for parking downtown. For now, free two-hour parking remains in place.
