A new calendar year means some new changes for Michiganders.
Minimum wage will increase .23 from $10.10 to $10.33. It is the SECOND of three raises that will establish a new minimum wage by 2025 of $10.56. Currently the federal minimum wage is $7.25. In 2024 more than 20 states will be increasing their wage minimums. 20 states still incorporate federal minimum wage as their minimum. Washington D.C. has the largest minimum wage at $17.oo and hour.
New gun laws also go into effect less than a year after the tragic MSU shooting. The new laws include safe storage, background checks and red flag/ extreme risk protection orders.
Michigan is also ending right-to-work in February. It has allowed those in unionized workplaces to opt out of paying union dues and fees. Originally passed by Republicans in 2012, the right-to-work law prohibited unionized workplaces from requiring employees to pay union dues and fees. The law was restricting to unions, and received pushback by union supporters in 2012. In early 2023, Michigan lawmakers voted to repeal the law — becoming the first state in 58 years to do so. The repeal is seen by many as a victory for organized labor at a time when union membership has been on the decline.
