Blackman Township has installed new security cameras at Rod Mills Park, located at 3300 W. Parnall Rd. The $36,650 project aims to deter vandalism and create a safer environment for park visitors, according to Township Supervisor Pete Jancek.

Jancek says the park has faced issues like illegal dumping and reckless driving in the parking lot. The new cameras will allow the Blackman-Leoni Public Safety Department to remotely monitor the area, helping identify and keep troublemakers away. Previously, trail cameras were used, but they require officers to manually retrieve footage.

The project was funded through the township’s parks budget, with a $25,000 grant from Consumers Energy Foundation covering much of the cost. Jancek expressed gratitude for the grant, which also supports other park improvements, including new pavilions, pickleball courts, walking trails, and restrooms at the former Marino’s Pizza site on W. Parnall Rd.

The township purchased the 18.5 acre property in 2023, with plans to transform it into a community park and temporary public safety office.
