Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — A grant from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is being used to install Jackson’s first accessible canoe and kayak launch on the Grand River. It will be located in Ella Sharp Park.
In an effort to provide more access to water trails in Jackson, the new launch will be installed along the Grand River off Maplewood Drive and Probert Road. It is being facilitated through the Upper Grand River Watershed Alliance and the Jackson County Drain Commissioner’s Office.
The City of Jackson says installing this launch on the river will improve water connectivity in Jackson County. A similar launch was previously installed at Vandercook Lake in Summit Township, to which the Grand River connects.
“We’re excited for the installation of this new launch. The long term plan is to provide more launches along the Grand River in Jackson in the coming years,” said City Parks and Recreation Director Kelli Hoover. “This will bring increased awareness of our waterways and provide more outdoor recreation options for our residents.”
Installation is scheduled for the first week of July.
