Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — Leoni Township is weighing its options as longtime building inspector Joe Chambers prepares to retire. At a study session Monday, April 4, the township board reviewed a proposal to contract with the City of Jackson for inspection and plan review services.
While many trustees said they believe Jackson could handle the job well, others expressed interest in exploring other options — like hiring a new full- or part-time inspector, or contracting with other agencies or businesses.
The city’s proposal would have Jackson inspectors perform code compliance checks and review building plans. In return, the township would pay a stipend and per-inspection fee — potentially saving $70,000 to $80,000 annually compared to the current full-time position.
Some board members raised concerns about inspector availability and whether residents would prefer the role stay in-house.
The board will revisit the issue at its next meeting, May 13 at 6 p.m. More details are available on Leoni Township’s website linked below.
