During last night’s Jackson City Council meeting, councilmembers unanimously approved a new plan for parking in downtown Jackson. The assessment funded “meterless parking” system will be replaced with a “pay-to-park” systrm within the Central Commercial District. Under the currently approved plan, the base rate for street side parking would be $2 per hour. City Engineer Troy White told WKHM this system allows more flexibility for downtown parking.

The City hopes this change also encourages those people who park long-term in downtown Jackson to use the parking lots, with discounts for parking permits that are purchased in bulk among other discounts.

It was acknowledged during the meeting that this decision is bound to be met with pushback. Jackson County Commissioner Steve Shotwell spoke about his concerns regarding this change in the parking process:

City Council meetings are held every other Tuesday at Jackson City Hall at 6:30 p.m.
