License plate-reading cameras will remain in use across Jackson County, thanks to new federal funding.
The Jackson City Council has approved a $40,000 grant through the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Program. The funds will be split between local law enforcement agencies, with Jackson Police receiving about $25,000 and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office getting nearly $15,000.
Police say the funding will help cover operational costs and maintain the camera system, which has been in place since 2022. The sheriff’s office also plans to purchase additional equipment. Officials say the technology has been key in solving crimes and tracking down wanted suspects.
Currently, 39 flock cameras are in operation across Jackson County. The cameras capture still images of license plates, which are checked against law enforcement databases. Data is stored for 30 days and used only in criminal investigations.
