Electric scooters may soon roll into downtown Jackson as a new way to get around.
On Tuesday, the City Council approved the first reading of an ordinance to regulate scooter use and rental services. Jackson Mayor Daniel Mahoney on WKHM said this will give those visiting downtown transportation options while shopping or working downtown. Similar programs already operate in other Michigan cities.
The proposal includes safety rules like a 15mph speed limit, helmet requirements for riders under 19, and designated parking areas. Companies would also need to ensure 20% of scooters are available in underserved neighborhoods.
A 12-month pilot program would track the impact before any permanent decisions are made. A final vote on the ordinance is set for March 25.
