Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — On Friday morning at approximately 7:43am, Blackman-Leoni Township Department of Public Safety was dispatched to Baker’s Gas and Welding, located at 3151 Cooper Street, for a significant CO2 leak from a 35,000-pound storage tank. The Jackson County HAZMAT team was notified and dispatched to the scene as well.
According to officials, first responders observed a large CO2 plume moving onto nearby roadways, including Cooper, Parnall, and Elm. For the safety of motorists and residents in the area, the Blackman-Leoni Department of Public Safety and the Michigan State Police temporarily shut down these roads and rerouted traffic.

Emergency crews, including the Jackson County HAZMAT team and the Jackson City Fire Department’s USAR/Hazmat unit, worked swiftly to activate emergency shutoff valves on the tank, successfully stopping the leak. The remaining CO2 cloud rapidly dissipated, and by 8:20 AM, all roads were reopened to the public.
No injuries were reported, and authorities say there is no ongoing risk to public safety. Notifications were made to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE). The Blackman-Leoni Township Department of Public Safety extends its gratitude to all agencies involved for their quick and professional response, ensuring the safety of the community.
