Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — The Jackson County Animal Shelter is caring for several rabbits in need of foster homes after taking in animals from a hoarding case in Saginaw County.

Six adult rabbits and three newborns are currently housed at the shelter and available for foster care. They were part of a larger group — about 60 rabbits found in a Saginaw basement earlier this month. Jackson County initially took in 16. So far, two have been adopted and two more placed in foster care.

Tragically, three of the babies have died — likely attacked by adult rabbits after being mistakenly housed together. Shelter staff say it’s not uncommon for rabbits to react aggressively to babies that aren’t their own.

All the rabbits are being treated for a rabbit-only form of syphilis and are being tested for ringworm, which can spread to humans and other animals. The shelter is currently reviewing foster applications and says foster families would need to provide about three weeks of care.
