Ypsilanti, Mich. (WKHM) — A preliminary report shows the timeline of events leading up to the crash of a Russian fighter jet performing at the Thunder Over Michigan Air Show on August 13, 2023. Investigators with the National Transportation of Safety Board (NTSB) say the Mig 23 fighter jet lost power after an engine didn’t fire properly.

The pilot was working out the issue, but the backseater told the pilot he wanted to eject and the pilot wasn’t ready. The pilot was still flying toward the runway, when his ejection seat fired. The plane crashed into the parking lot of a Belleville apartment complex.

The passenger told investigators they needed to get out, but he doesn’t specifically remember pulling the handle. The pilot told investigators that only one person has to pull the ejection handle for both seats to eject.
