Recently there was an audit of the Michigan Unemployment System, and it was discovered that millions of dollars in benefits were paid to persons in jail and even to some dead people, all because of fraud. That is one of many findings of a new audit of the Unemployment Insurance Agency. Along with the 245 million paid out to non-existent persons or those incarcerated, the state also didn’t follow up with the biggest allowable fines when they did catch persons involved with defrauding the agency. The agency’s director says since the end of the pandemic, they are working to resolve issues and have built an entirely new bureau and have overhauled systems to fight fraud and better provide service for workers and businesses in Michigan.
