Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s proposed $67 billion state budget proposes a $5 million allocation for improving state Capitol security by financing staffing and equipment such as metal detectors.
The Michigan Capitol Commission banned open-carry firearms on January 11.
Governor Whitmer has supported a full weapons ban in the Capitol building. Back in April, armed protestors entered the state Capitol in defiance of the Governor’s pandemic restrictions.
Both the Governor’s budget proposal and legislation to ban firearms would have to be approved by the Legislature.
