Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — The Jackson County Civics Bee, as part of the overall National Civics Bee for middle school students, took place Wednesday evening at Spring Arbor University. The event was hosted by the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce, as eighteen Local Finalists showed off their knowledge of civics. After the first two rounds, which consisted of the participants answering multiple choice questions, the field was narrowed to the top five students. Those students then answered questions about their previously written essays, focused on problems the students believe their community is facing and how they would solve them.

Following the third round, the students with the top three scores were announced. Charlotte M. was the 1st Place scorer, winning the top cash prize of $500. Charlotte said she plans on using the money to buy more books to read. Dilynn F. finished in 2nd Place ($250), and Kaydence S. got 3rd Place ($125). All three students also received a trophy for their accomplishments, attend Grass Lake Middle School, and have earned a spot at the State Competition in Lansing.

Lumen Christi Catholic School teacher Dick Cooper, who teaches one of the students who placed in the top five, said he was impressed by all of the students who participated.

He also emphasized the task the students had of getting ready for the Civics Bee while also making sure to stay on top of their normal schoolwork.

The Michigan State Competition for the National Civics Bee will take place on July 9th.
