JACKSON, Mich. (WKHM) — Michigan residents served by Consumers Energy can recycle working household appliances as part of the utility’s ongoing energy efficiency initiatives. Through April 30, eligible electric customers can receive increased incentives for recycling refrigerators, freezers, and smaller appliances.

As part of its year-round appliance recycling program, Consumers Energy offers free pickup of operable appliances. During the April Earth Month promotion, participants can receive a $70 rebate for each qualifying refrigerator or freezer recycled—an increase from the standard $50 rebate. Additionally, $15 rebates are available for recycling items such as room air conditioners, dehumidifiers, and compact refrigerators or freezers.

To qualify, appliances must be in working condition and empty. Pick-up is available at no cost to the customer.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s EnergyStar program, older refrigerators can consume up to three times more energy than modern models. Consumers Energy estimates that recycling an outdated appliance could save customers up to $150 annually on energy costs.

Since launching its recycling program in 2009, the utility reports that more than 330,000 large appliances have been collected and recycled.

Customers can schedule an appliance pick-up by calling 866-234-0445 or by visiting consumersenergy.com/recycle. Consumers Energy is also organizing 10 recycling events across Michigan through September to further support appliance recycling efforts.

Additional energy-saving programs offered by the utility include rebates on smart thermostats and water heaters, as well as in-home energy assessments. More information about available programs and eligibility can be found at consumersenergy.com/save.
