JACKSON, Mich. (WKHM) – Community members in Jackson will have an opportunity to recycle a wide range of materials for free during an Earth Day Recycling Drive on Tuesday, April 22. The event will take place from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at 1401 N. Brown Street, hosted in partnership by Recycling Jackson and Gerdau.

Accepted items include glass, Styrofoam, batteries, electronics (such as televisions, cell phones, laptops, computers, keyboards, and mice), cardboard, office paper, clean plastic food and beverage containers, small appliances, and latex paint. Organizers emphasize that all materials must be clean and sorted to be accepted.

Recycling Jackson is a local, volunteer-run nonprofit that holds monthly recycling drives on the first Saturday of each month. The group focuses on diverting waste from landfills by accepting a wide variety of materials and helping ensure proper sorting at the collection site.

Gerdau, a steel manufacturer with operations in Jackson, is sponsoring the Earth Day event. Company representative Lindsey Erb noted the limited recycling options currently available in the Jackson area and highlighted the value of community-driven efforts to fill the gap.

Recycling Jackson President Steve Noble said the event aims to encourage greater public participation in recycling and promote awareness of environmental sustainability.

National data from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) shows that less than 25% of electronics in the U.S. are recycled or reused. The event provides an opportunity to safely dispose of old electronics, with Recycling Jackson’s vendor following strict data security protocols to protect personal information.
