Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — A man was fatally shot by law enforcement Sunday afternoon after a standoff along U.S. 127 near Barnes Road in Ingham County. According to the sheriff’s office, the man was not handcuffed and was holding a knife in each hand when he was shot.

The situation began around 4 p.m. when a driver reported someone walking against traffic. Videos shared on social media suggested the man was restrained, but Sheriff Scott Wriggelsworth clarified Monday that he was not, and was not shot in the back.

Wriggelsworth said a Taser was used but didn’t stop the man, and officers responded based on the total situation — not just a short video clip.

One video shows the man charging toward the police car, knives in hand. Another shows him jumping a barrier and approaching the officers.

Despite efforts to save him, the man died. One officer was treated for minor injuries. Michigan State Police is now investigating.

Wriggelsworth added, “Our prayers remain with all involved.”
