Jackson city officials have announced a temporary pause on the planned implementation of a metered pay-to-park system in the downtown area following feedback from business owners and community members. The decision comes after a recent discussion between Mayor Daniel Mahoney and downtown business owners, during which concerns were raised about the potential impact of metered parking on local businesses and customer access.

“We have received significant input from business owners and community members,” said Mayor Mahoney. “Our priority is to develop a parking system that serves residents, visitors, and businesses effectively. Given the feedback, we believe additional discussions are necessary before proceeding.”

To further evaluate the proposal, the Jackson City Council has scheduled a special meeting for Wednesday, March 26, at 7 p.m. The meeting will provide an opportunity for city officials to address public concerns, consider alternative solutions, and ensure that any modifications to downtown parking align with community interests.

The metered parking system was originally set to take effect on July 1, 2025, with the goal of generating revenue for parking maintenance by shifting financial responsibility from business owners to those using the spaces. However, public response has prompted a reconsideration of this approach.

“We remain committed to an open dialogue with the community and to ensuring that any changes to downtown parking reflect the needs of Jackson’s residents and businesses,” Mayor Mahoney said. “We look forward to a constructive discussion at the upcoming meeting.”

The special meeting will take place in the City Council Chambers on the second floor of City Hall, located at 161 W. Michigan Ave.
