Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — Empty cages and tanks are all that remain at Imagine Planet, a Jackson nonprofit that once cared for nearly 100 animals. Executive Director Jean McKim says she always believed her facility was the best place for them.
But on Thursday, animal control removed most of the animals. McKim says Jackson County Animal Shelter Lydia Sattler had visited earlier in the week, urging changes. McKim claims they weren’t given enough time to act before authorities arrived.
Sattler says there have been ongoing complaints about the facility since last December, citing animal welfare and public health concerns. Animal control, she says, repeatedly informed Imagine Planet of needed improvements.
McKim disputes how the animals were handled, alleging improper transport and inadequate care, like a macaw placed in an unheated dog carrier.
Despite the setback, McKim says she’s determined to clean and reorganize the facility in hopes of regaining custody of the animals.
