Henrietta Twp., Michigan (WKHM) — Renovation work on the exterior of the Henrietta Branch, one of 13 branches within the Jackson District Library (JDL) system, is approaching completion. The project, which began in early September following an approval from JDL officials this summer, includes the installation of new windows, doors, an access ramp, updated siding, and stone facades. Library officials anticipate that the work will be finished by early December.

According to JDL Director Liz Breed, the Henrietta Branch renovation is part of a series of improvements to JDL facilities across Jackson County. “We made a promise to our patrons and county residents in 2016 to update our buildings, and we are committed to following through on that promise,” Breed said.

The project’s total cost is just under $250,000, with $50,000 funded by a grant from the Michigan Arts and Culture Council. Breed expressed appreciation for the council’s financial support, which has also contributed to other JDL programs, including the longstanding Storyfest celebration. “This grant helps reduce the financial burden on taxpayers, allowing us to maintain accessible, modern facilities and offer enriching programs and events,” she said.

Throughout the construction, the Henrietta Branch has remained open, with local contractor Jones Construction overseeing the renovations. JDL officials plan to continue upgrades to other branches over the coming years, building on past projects such as the expansion of the Brooklyn Branch in 2020, the addition of a bookmobile in 2021, and the relocation of the Spring Arbor Branch to a new building in 2023, alongside the renovated Eastern Branch that same year.

JDL Board of Trustees President Stephen Rajzer highlighted the importance of these projects for the community. “It’s essential for residents to have modern, safe, and accessible library branches, and we’re grateful for the continued support of Jackson County voters, which enables us to move forward with these improvements,” Rajzer said.

Jackson County residents approved JDL’s operating millage with around 60% support in the recent Nov. 5 general election, reinforcing community backing for the library’s ongoing renovations and modernization efforts.
