Jackson, Mich. (WKHM, Greg O’Connor) — Just after 5 p.m. Wednesday, November 6, Jackson’s north side was hit with what sounded like a couple of large explosions, followed by the unmistakable sound of police vehicles in the area.

Jackson Police and the Sheriff’s Department were involved in a high speed chase. The suspect was wanted in a shooting incident from Lenawee County around 4 p.m. that day. As police approached the suspect’s van, they took off resulting in a high speed chase.

The suspect began firing a gun at police and a Sergeant was hit, who was then rushed to Henry Ford Jackson Hospital in “good” condition. The suspect was eventually stopped and a further shootout with the police ensued. The suspect was eventually hit with gunfire. Life saving efforts at the scene proved unsuccessful and the yet-to-be-identified suspect was pronounced dead at Henry Ford Jackson Hospital.

The Jackson police officers and Jackson County Sheriff’s Deputy involved were placed on paid leave, which is standard operating procedure. The investigation is being conducted by the Michigan State Police.
