Nine of the people injured in Saturday night’s multi-vehicle crash on I-96 near Webberville have now been released from the hospital, according to a spokesperson from McLaren Greater Lansing Hospital in Lansing, who confirmed the patients’ release this morning.
The devastating accident occurred around 11:40 p.m. on I-96 near the M-52 overpass. A semi-truck, unable to stop for congested traffic ahead, collided with multiple vehicles and subsequently caught fire. The crash resulted in the tragic deaths of four individuals and left 17 others critically injured. Altogether, 15 vehicles were involved, according to police reports. Some of the injured were transported to University of Michigan Health-Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, though the current conditions and number of those still hospitalized remain unknown.
Michigan State Police reported that the semi-truck driver was taken to the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor for medical treatment. Tragically, the crash claimed the life of a 29-year-old man from Carson City who was driving a Ford F-150 pickup. Three additional victims, all related and from Lansing, were killed in the crash: a 20-year-old woman, a 43-year-old woman, and a 47-year-old man, all occupants of a Chevy Trax.
Following the incident, Michigan Department of Transportation crews inspected the westbound overpass on I-96. By Sunday night, both I-96 and the M-52 overpass had been reopened.
