Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — Small businesses in Jackson now have a new resource to help them open their doors while working toward full code compliance, thanks to the City’s new “Fix 36” program. Designed to address the challenges that often prevent business owners from starting ventures in older, underutilized buildings, the City of Jackson’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Department and Community Development Department have teamed up to introduce this initiative.
The Fix 36 program is aimed at closing the gap between the high cost of renovations and the entrepreneurial drive that fuels local economic growth. It allows new businesses to open sooner by providing a phased, 36-month compliance plan for meeting City codes. This gradual approach gives owners the flexibility to bring their properties up to code while generating revenue.
Participants work with the City’s Community Development Department to establish a timeline for completing each phase of the necessary renovations. To demonstrate commitment, businesses are required to submit a refundable $2,500 escrow deposit. The program’s first priority is to ensure safety compliance, with other improvements—like facade upgrades, parking lot repairs, and roof work—scheduled over time. The program focuses on revitalizing neighborhood commercial areas that need economic development the most.
John Willis, Director of the DEI Department, explains that the idea for Fix 36 was born from seeing many small business owners abandon their plans because of the costs associated with bringing older buildings up to current standards. “The Fix 36 Program offers a crucial opportunity for entrepreneurs to open their doors sooner, generate income, and make improvements gradually. This is a lifeline for businesses in key areas of Jackson,” said Willis.
Mayor Daniel Mahoney praised the program, saying, “Fix 36 reflects our commitment to supporting local businesses and fostering a stronger economy in Jackson. It’s not just about compliance—it’s about giving entrepreneurs a path to success while helping revitalize our community.”
