Jackson, Mich. (WKHM, Greg O’Connor) — A 23-year-old Jackson woman was killed when her SUV went off Westbound I-96 early Saturday morning and hit a tree. Brooke Newman, a 2018 graduate of Lumen Christi Catholic High School was pronounced dead at the scene. She was not wearing a seatbelt. Newman is survived by her parents, Dan and Karen Newman, and two sisters, Baylie and Blake. Blake Newman Gillig recently coached Lumen Christi girls soccer to a state championship. Services are being held Saturday morning at Queens at 11 a.m. Family will receive friends Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. The crash remains under investigation by the Livingston County Sheriff’s Department.

A routine traffic stop turned into a drug bust for Jackson police. They stopped a vehicle on Chittock, the passenger had an outstanding warrant, felony drugs, and was arrested. Jackson police called in a K-9 unit and suspected drugs were sniffed out. A knife was also located in the vehicle.

Major power outage in Grand Ledge Thursday just before noon, affecting some 5,000 customers. Consumers Energy located an intruder — a squirrel — at the main Grand Ledge substation who did not survive. Consumers had power fully restored after about two hours.
